Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and introduced the first table of characters who will separate from the main group to begin their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team consists of the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at the same party would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear mismatched, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to head next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, striking the rogue, and stealing all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • However, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the team enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a multiple motives, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to head to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the participants to form the Explorers and Strategists parties.

Fans can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
