Disappointing Oracle Earnings Report Erase Over $70 Billion From Valuation, Fueling Artificial Intelligence Hype Fears.

Oracle's disappointing latest earnings have slashed in excess of $70bn from the value of the software and data company established by billionaire Larry Ellison, intensifying growing apprehensions of a hype cycle in artificial intelligence stocks.

Steep Share Price Drop Follows Revenue Shortfall

Stock in the company plunged by eleven and a half percent overnight after it reported a weaker-than-anticipated 14% rise in sales to $16bn in the previous quarter, as it simultaneously announced plans to increase its AI spending by approximately $15bn.

The business recorded softer-than-forecast three-month sales for the quarter ending in November, with sales at its core cloud computing business growing at a more modest rate than projected, at 34 percent.

Investor Concerns Over Spending and Leverage

Investors were further let down by a slower than expected 68 percent growth in revenues from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, investors were unnerved by the company's increased forecasts for spending on artificial intelligence. It now expects capital expenditure to leap by forty percent to $50bn, with the lion's share of the increase aimed at building data centres.

This substantial spending plan comes amid a ballooning leverage, with Oracle's corporate debt having jumped by twenty-five percent over the past year to reach $99.9bn.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not catastrophic, but it came to reinforce fears around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an uncertain timeline for profitability," said a market analyst.

Wider Sector Repercussions and Industry Risks

Continued excitement about the promise of AI technology has led to a sharp rise in stock prices in recent months, but there has been a increasing chorus of warnings from regulators and executives who argue equity prices could tumble if investors become let down by the progress or commercial uptake of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important technology provider creating enterprise solutions for major firms worldwide and has in recent years found strength in cloud computing, analysts point to growing concerns about how dependent firms are becoming on each other’s financing within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle disclosed that its measure of remaining performance obligations soared by 440% over the past year. However, market watchers were wary when it was revealed that these contracts were propelled by new commitments from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not soothe concerns that big tech's AI investments are becoming circular, which makes the sector vulnerable to a loss of investor confidence," stated a market strategist.

"In summary, strong backlog increase was not enough to alleviate fears about AI and the huge amount of investment spending required by companies to develop AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in Tech Stocks

Additional AI and tech-related stocks subsequently slid in extended trading following the Oracle announcement. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price declined by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares plunged by 7.7% on Thursday.
