European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
