The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
